Help With Stress

We all deal with stress everyday whether we work for a fortune 500 company as an executive or as a waitress in the local diner, or a stay at home mom or dad, or as a police officer. Not only do we deal with emotional stress, we deal with environmental stress. 75% of Americans describe their jobs as stressful, 20% say it’s “super-stressful”.

Did you know that working mothers between the ages of 25 and 40 report the greatest amount of stress? Or that nearly 1/2 of Americans between 18 and 49 experience stress every day? The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) estimates that 75%-90% of doctors visits are stress related. And these numbers are expected to increase.

What Is Stress?

Stress can mean many different things to different people and is defined many ways. One definition is: Stress is our body’s way of responding to a demand of any kind.

Another is: Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside world.

Still another is: We generally use the word “stress” when we feel that everything seems to have become too much – we are overloaded and wonder whether we really can cope with the pressures placed upon us. Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress.

However you define it, stress has the same metabolic response, the release of certain types of chemicals and the hormones adrenalin and cortisol into our bodies in response to what is going on around us or in our minds. This happens if we are in a dangerous situation or when we think stressful thoughts about a situation.

Any threat that we perceive to ourselves and, in some cases those around us, we have a reaction. How many of us have had a situation, or many situations, where we felt our whole body stress when even thinking about a problem or something we have to do when we don’t want to? Everyday stress and high cortisol levels can have a negative effect on long term health.

AAGGHH, Why am I Feeling So Stressed Out?Some people resort to destructive behaviors to deal with stress like, drinking, smoking, over eating, over exercising, illicit or prescription drugs. More than a third of Americans have tried to alleviate stress with supplements, especially the herbal supplement kava. But kava can produce unwanted drowsiness, and on March 25, 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers of the potential risk of severe liver injury associated with the use of kava-containing dietary supplements.

How to Reduce Stress

Is there any help in relieving stress? Stress relievers vary from person to person, but there are supplements that can help and some proactive things you can do. First, pray. Studies have shown prayer to be a great stress reliever. Next, you want to take control of your thoughts. This is not easy, but you can get very good at it. It begins with realizing you have toxic thoughts. You notice yourself brooding over something and your body is tense. STOP thinking.

Clear your mind or replace those thoughts with “happy” thoughts. Sounds corny, I know, but it works. Instead of thinking the worst, look on the bright(er) side. Negativity NEVER gets anyone anywhere, except in the dumps. On the flip-side, being an unrealistic optimist can also cause stress, so remember to balance.

And of course, work on relieving your body. Take leisurely walks and appreciate the world around you (find just one thing you can appreciate or be happy about) or go for a jog, but don’t over due it. Sit in a dark room by yourself or take a bubble bath and let the world go.

Try a massage, pedicure, or acupuncture. Listen to soothing music, like nature sounds or soft instrumentals. Evening Passages by Ed Van Fleet is a great one, I use to listen to it every night as I fell asleep. Make yourself relax when you feel the stress coming, remember to control your thoughts.

The most important way to deal with stress is eating a proper diet that supports your body’s ability to fight off stress causing problems. Like Mom said, eat your fruits and veggies and stay away from processed, GMO, artificial, and fast foods. If you just change your diet by cutting out high fructose corn syrup and excessive sugar, especially diet or any soda, you will have a good start.

Because it is so hard to get the nutrition we need from our food now-a-days, you can support your body with high quality vitamin supplements. Shaklee’s Stress Relief Complex is one of these supplements. I have felt it work and many others have, too. Working mothers, adults with stressful jobs, anyone in the public eye, and anyone who deals with occasional stress can benefit.
