AT IT AGAIN

So, another junk science study came out. This one linked vitamin E use to increased prostate cancer in men. For those of you who have read my previous posts, you probably know what I think about this junk science and they way it is proliferated and regurgitated all over the place. It sickens me to know very useful antioxidants our bodies need are being singled out and demonized.

You can read the reports at Yahoo News, Medicine Net.com, and Yahoo News again among other places. Although a good rebuttal is posted at Alliance for Natural Health website. They all say the same thing: (paraphrase) New study shows vitamin E use and supplementation can increase your risk for prostate cancer. Doctors urge to get off supplements and come and see them for more screening and options. No one reports the inadequacy of the scientific “methods” used. They just point to making sure you go through your doctor to get tested so you can take their prescription medications.

Forget the many other credible vitamin E studies that prove its effectiveness as an antioxidant and disease fighter, especially when paired with selenium. Forget the fact that synthetic vitamin E, which most doctors prescribe and was used in this study at inadequate amounts to begin with, can’t be properly utilized by our body. Once again, a backdoor push to remove supplements from our lives is on display.

A Scientific Study or Propaganda?

Once again poor methods were used. Not to get a truthful outcome, but to make sure the outcome “proved” vitamin use is dangerous. When a natural vitamin or supplement shows itself useful it is systematically attacked and “proven” dangerous in one “scientific” study or another.

There are so many things wrong with these studies. Here are a couple highlights. They did not use the right kind of vitamin E. The only way to get benefits from this supplement is to take the natural form, not the synthetic form doctors push. The benefits increase when paired with selenium. They did not use the correct amount. 400 IU is not sufficient for dramatic effects. No care was taken to keep track of the participants diets or the placebo’s effect. Keeping track of diet is key. The placebo used may have included magnesium which can be beneficial and throw off test results.

Requirements vary on the amounts of vitamin E needed based on exposure to free radicals and if there are high levels of polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) in your diet. The Daily Value (DV) for E is a mere 30 IU. The minimal amount for optimal disease protection is 400 IU. A study by Dr. Lawrence Machlin and co-workers at the Cornell Medical School showed that healthy people could take up to 3,200 IU a day and not have any problems.

Ask yourself, who benefits from this study?

What happens if people flee from their vitamin usage? Doctors and pharmaceutical companies gain customers. As long as they can suppress good nutrition and produce synthetic, money-making “medicines”, they can entice the population to listen only to them and their recommendations. When alternative or natural therapies come up in conversation, they want people’s first reaction to be distrust and contempt. Think about it, what do you or those around you think about “alternative” therapies?

Not to say that all doctors are like this. Some are beginning to embrace the first unofficial rule of medicine; “Let your medicine be your food. And food be your medicine.” They understand eating a balanced diet, exercising, and using vitamin and mineral supplements as close to whole food as possible is a great way to get valuable, usable nutrition we just can’t get from our genetically modified foods and poor dietary habits.

Throughout the course of history it would seem that most of our Western medicine is actually “alternative” therapy. Our diets consist of empty calories and different forms of sugar. Shouldn’t we go back to the times of local, naturally grown food? We have an FDA and big pharmaceutical conglomerate we can not trust with our health. It is up to us to see what works for ourselves focusing on properly done scientific studies, not propaganda put out by profiteers.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Vitamin E is a valuable antioxidant. Do we really want to put our blind faith and trust in those who make it their business to “treat” sickness instead of prevent it? You wouldn’t bring a pocket-knife to a gunfight. You would ask questions and research the best and most efficient gun. So why would you go into your doctor’s office with a well thought out set of prepared questions with the research to back it up?

You are in charge of your life, but there is a push to take that away. This is how they do it; find a natural substance they can not replicate that can make people well and demonize it; junk science at its finest. Make sure you eat a good diet and if you take a supplement research it. Only take the natural form of E called d-alpha-tocopherol, NOT the synthetic, called dl-alpha-tocopherol. Take at least 400 IU and make sure the supplement includes selenium.

Talk to people using the drugs and people taking supplements. I know people who have taken and take hundreds of Shaklee vitamins a day. They get better, not sicker. Choose a brand that works and incorporate it into your daily routine of healthy eating and exercise.
