Women Who Take “Multivitamins” Are More Likely to Die?

Have you seen the news lately? The AMA (American Medical Association) has put out a study that is both useless and misleading. The study assessed the use of vitamin and mineral supplements in nearly 39,000 women whose average age was 62. The researchers asked the women to fill out three surveys, the first in 1986, the second in 1997, and the last in 2004, reporting what supplements they took and what foods they ate, and answering a few questions about their health.

Then the researchers looked at how many of the women had died by 2008. They reported that the number of deaths were somewhat higher for women who took copper, a little bit lower for women who took calcium, but about average for most of the women.

How is it a scientific study if the women report the “results” themselves only 3 times over 19 years?? Over that time no studies were conducted on their blood levels, the types of vitamins they were using was not established, and there was no oversight on their dietary habits. This is scientific manipulation (a.k.a. corporate science) at its worst; or best since no one but those who read this will report the truth that repudiates these findings.

The media and the medical establishment has already concluded; “Multivitamins and some dietary supplements, used regularly by an estimated 234 million US adults, may do more harm than good, according to a study that tied their use to higher death rates among older women.”

The study’s authors outrageously concluded, “We see little justification for the general and widespread use of dietary supplements.” Is this more proof that the medical establishment, the big drug companies and the government are working to keep us sick? Vitamins and natural remedies are attacked left and right. Everything possible is done to undermine their benefits.

Choosing A Multivitamin

Okay, first things first. Supplements. How can you know you are using the proper supplements? The company that makes them will have a philosophy that demands top quality products and go to great pains to test, study and prove their supplements work. They will do their own product testing. Unfortunately, we do not know what type of supplements the people in the studies used. Were they synthetic? Did they have the proper balance of usable nutrition?

I will say that not just any vitamin is good for you. Vitamins made with synthetic “nutrients” actually do more harm than good. For instance, without the proper balance of supporting nutrients your body can not use all of the calcium you may be giving it (say by eating Tums or just taking a cheap calcium supplement) causing an overabundance of calcium that can basically attack your body. You want to make sure that you don’t just pull any multivitamin off the shelf and think it’s going to help.

You want a supplement that is as close to natural food as it can be. No added fillers or harmful chemicals or preservatives of any kind. You want a supplement that your body will be able to use. If the pill doesn’t breakdown where it needs, how can you get the most out of the supplement? You want proof that the supplements work. That means many different scientific studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals; not corporate science.

I guess I sound a little paranoid, but in truth I’m just being realistic. Those who have not read, seen and heard what I have over the last several months while researching these various health related topics would probably look at me like I sprouted another head. The best thing we can do is be informed of what the media doesn’t want us to know and share it with others.

Research whichever company you are going to purchase health products from. Make sure they do their own testing and are proud of it. Talk to people who use the products, do they work?

Recommended Multivitamin

Remember, you are master of your own health, for now. Do your best to eat organically grown foods, especially darkly pigmented fruits and veggies and keep up on what your senators are planning with supplements. Go for a reputable local farmer’s unpasteurized milk instead of mass produced pasteurized milk from the store. Incorporate as many herbs and spices into your cooking as you can, forget the iodized salt. Throw out commercial cleaners and go green with Get Clean.

When a study comes out putting down a vitamin, be careful and look at how the study was conducted before you draw your conclusions. It’s just impossible to take them at face value.
