Safer Ways to Mental Health

Psychiatric Drugs The First Gate-Way DrugPsychotropic Drug Side Effects and Better Ways to Mental Health

(part 6 of Mental Health series. Videos 16-18 of documentary The Marketing of Madness below)

There are many long and short term side effects of psychotropic drugs. Violence, suicide, depression, anxiety, mood swings, hallucinations, sicknesses, addiction, loss of job, dangerous thoughts, seizures, tremors, sleeplessness and terrible physical withdrawl symptoms are just some of the thousands of side effects these drugs cause.

Why do people still take mood altering drugs with all these side effects? They are not told that psychiatric drugs cause these symptoms. Psychiatrists say that these symptoms are caused because they need the medication.

All you have to do is talk to people who have tried to get off these drugs or change because of them. It takes people months or years to get off these drugs completely; some can never stop.

I know a girl who was on several different psychotropic drugs. She said she felt like a zombie while taking them. She had no feelings, no care about what was going on around her. She almost died when she stopped cold turkey, her liver started to shut down. She had to allow her body to come off them slowly since her body had changed and become dependent on them.

It took her a year to ween herself off these drugs and she never wants to go back on them. You tell me how that is benefiting anyone?

What You Can Do Other Than Drugs

Have a support system. Understanding and compassion from others can do more to help those with mental and emotional problems than putting people on drugs. It was proven back in the 70′s by Dr. Loren Mosher with the Soteria Project that people with schizophrenia do better with a support system than their peers who were given psychotropic drugs.

In 1998 Dr. Mosher said that “Psychiatry has been almost completely bought out by the drug companies.” He went on to say that as psychiatry is being practiced today, it is mostly a hoax.

Nutrition is another key player in mental health. Did you know that many mental issues are a result of iron and b vitamin deficiencies? Nope, the doctors wouldn’t tell you that. But imagine if eating better foods and taking a supplement could help, would you try it first?

Other Causes of Mental Problems

The non-drug treatments of mental illness have been pushed out by political pressure and lobbying by the drug companies. They do not want you to know about other pathways to getting better. Check all other and available options before deciding to medicate.

Iron deficiency, pesticide poisoning, viruses, parasites, food allergies, stress, low thyroid, lack of b vitamins, and other underlying physical ailments can also cause mental issues.

Your Rights

Informed consent is your legal right. You must be told about your diagnosis, and risks, benefits and alternatives to treatment and non-treatment.

The key points of informed consent are:

  1. Psychiatric disorders are NOT really diseases requiring medical treatment
  2. There is NO scientific proof that psychotropic drugs help or cure any mental problems
  3. Psychiatric drugs mask symptoms and come with severe short and long term side effects
  4. Psychiatric drugs can cause dependency and addiction
  5. Most mental problems are caused by an underlying physical illness or vitamin deficiency
  6. No matter how severe the emotional or psychological distress, there are many effective options that do not involve psychiatric drugs

Things Are Changing

2005 there have been 50,000 individual product liability and personal injury lawsuits filed against drug companies for damage caused by psychotropic drugs. Unfortunately, the amounts of money like 2.4 million or 2.3 billion given in the settlements are just a tiny fraction of the 600 billion drug companies make. They set aside millions for lawsuits as a cost of doing business.
